And when they\u2019re older it\u2019s great to have a host of toys to keep them occupied \u2013 but once the house starts getting overrun with train sets and cuddly Peppa Pigs, it might be time to start asking well-meaning relatives to put the money towards something that will help your children in the long-run instead.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Dilusha Hettiralalage, consumer savings expert at\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.Codes.co.uk\" rel=\"nofollow\">Codes.co.uk<\/a> says: \u201cWhen your child is a baby or a toddler, it\u2019s perfectly okay to ask for money instead of gifts when it comes to their birthday and Christmas.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u201cThey\u2019re likely to get lots of toys, they\u2019re too young to understand what\u2019s going on, and the money would be better off put into an account that the child can have access to when they\u2019re older (hopefully the money will accrue interest over the years so that \u00a35 or \u00a310 gift could turn into a tidy sum).\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">You can ask relatives and friends to use one of the options below to start saving for your child\u2019s future themselves, adding in a little more every birthday and Christmas &#8211; or ask them to give you the cash to invest into whatever option you choose for your children\u2019s savings.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Junior ISA (JISA)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">A Junior ISA lets parents save up to \u00a34,368 a year (\u00a384 a week) in a tax-free savings account. The cash can only be accessed by the child once they turn 18.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Just like an adult ISA, a JISA can be held in cash or stocks and shares.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Kerry Dean says: \u201cJunior ISA subscriptions are increasing, so that\u2019s great news for children.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u201cHowever, many parents are still opting for Cash JISAs for their children \u2013 almost six in ten according to HMRC data &#8211; despite historic figures demonstrating that stocks and shares accounts may ultimately outperform cash.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bmogam.com\/gb-en\/retail\/plans-explained\/jisa\/)\" rel=\"nofollow\">BMO Global Asset Management<\/a> has more information that might help you figure out whether a cash or a stocks and shares JISA is the way forward for you<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Start a Pension<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Yes, that <em>does<\/em> sound even more ridiculous than opening a savings account for someone who has only been on the planet for five minutes \u2013 but you could make your kid a small fortune by starting a pension pot when they are born!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">You can put a maximum of \u00a32,880 into a junior self-invested personal pension (SIPP) for each child every year \u2013 tax-free.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">The Government will then add \u00a3720 in tax relief \u2013 boosting the total to \u00a33,600. That\u2019s a 25% growth.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Obviously not everyone can afford to squirrel away that amount every month but contributing what you can \u2013 no matter how little \u2013 will still create a handsome pot for their retirement.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Children&#8217;s Saving Accounts<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">You can set up an account with a bank or building society on behalf of a child \u2013 which they can start managing themselves from as young as seven-years-old.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Having their own account can help make them more money-aware and encourage them to develop good savings habits.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Premium Bonds<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Everyone has a \u00a33,000 \u2018gift allowance\u2019 available every year, which allows parents, grandparents and friends to give money away without it incurring inheritance tax as long as they live for seven years from gifting the cash.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Parents, legal guardians, grandparents and great-grandparents can invest between \u00a325 and \u00a350,000 into a Government-backed savings product run by National Savings &amp; Investments (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nsandi.com\/gift\" rel=\"nofollow\">NS&amp;I<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Also, account holders are entered into monthly draws for cash prizes of up to \u00a31 million.
